Meditation battles

I have always loved the idea of meditation, I do however struggle to stay focused. One of two things usually happen.
My mind will flood with unrelated thoughts.
I fall asleep.
I hear these are quite common things and to keep trying but I thought I would give you an example of what happened to me the other night when I was listening to a guided meditation.
It was 8pm, I went to bed early to master meditation #igotthis.
I got ready, lay down, put on a meditation and closed my eyes. I'm not gonna lie, this meditation was doing a bit of the opposite of what it was supposed to. I felt agitated by the woman's voice and must have hit my phone and in the process I changed the speed to 1.5x so she was talking ridiculously fast and it became more agitating, I leaned over to flick on my lamp and get my glasses and managed to knock over a full glass of water. The water spilt over 2 novels, a magazine, a journal, a watch, my phone, two walls and the floor. It was carnage and stress levels were the opposite of what was intended.
It took me a while to get myself sorted and needless to say that was the end of that for the evening. Instead I researched a bit after texting a friend about my debacle.

I legit don't know what to do with my hands...
Is it just me? Or is it that we are all living in a world where slowing down and finding the time for yourself is a challenge. Currently it shouldn't be given the state of the world and all the time I am spending in my house and to be honest I refuse to accept that.
I know I will find my own way to meditate that will help me get what I need. I'll keep you posted and please feel free to comment below what has worked for you or any recommendations. Namaste?
